GGI and HGI Pumping

Grease Interceptor Pumping and Cleaning Standards

Pumping and cleaning standards for gravity grease interceptors (GGI) and hydromechanical grease interceptors (HGI) are important. These videos and checklists can be used to educate pumpers, FSEs and other stakeholders.

Gravity Grease Interceptor (GGI) pumping and cleaning standards

       GGI Pump Out Checklist

  • Completely pump out all contents in the interceptor, so its integrity can be inspected
  • Note baffle wall condition and any water leaking from the outer walls

Gravity Grease Interceptor (GGI) cleaning standards

       GGI Cleaning Standards Checklist

  • Remove all accumulated grease from the walls
  • Ledge/ridge 3D grease buildup
  • Formed gel buildup on GGI rings (manhole covers)
  • Grease clumps on the walls
  • Pressure-wash the inside of the inlet and outlet tees
  • Pressure-wash the inside of the transfer piping (baffle wall)
  • Note GGI condition for FOG report
  • Report any missing outlet tee
  • Note baffle wall condition
  • Missing pipe
  • Water leaking in at any part of the baffle wall
  • Water leaking in from any of the outer walls

Hydromechanical Grease Interceptor (HGI) pumping and cleaning standards

        HGI Pump Out Checklist

  • Remove lid and scrape/clean off any FOG buildup on inner part of lid
  • Pump out all materials in the HGI completely

Hydromechanical Grease Interceptor (HGI) cleaning standards

      HGI Cleaning Standards Checklist

  • Remove baffles or diffusers and scrape/clean off all 3D FOG buildup
  • Scrape/Clean inside of HGI before refilling with clean water (depending on jurisdiction requirements)
  • Remove visible 3D grease
  • Remove as much hardened grease along the top ridge of the HGI as possible
  • Vacuum any residue left at the bottom of the HGI
  • Replace baffle or diffusers
  • Note HGI condition for FOG Report
  • Missing/rusted out baffle
  • Diffuser condition
  • Holes in HGI- metal/plastic
